Can We Trust The Bible

Intro: Can We Trust The Bible?

In religion, the question of how God has revealed Himself and what constitutes final authority, is of first importance. As much as we value sincerity, it is no substitute for TRUTH. When you think about it, truth is the basis on which we make decisions in every other area of life. For instance, who would think of choosing a physician or an engineer simply because the person was sincere? No, we want the people who treat our health needs and build our bridges to do their work on the basis of medical principles that are grounded in truth, and engineering principles that are grounded in truth. Likewise, faith in God, to be genuine, must be anchored in truth. This means that the question posed in the title of this course, "Can We Trust the Bible?" - is an extremely important one. Answering this question will help resolve the issue of what is the source of final authority for truth about God and our relationship to Him. It is a logical place to begin for if we determine that the Bible is not truth, then our time would be wasted considering its claims. Christians believe that the Bible is the final and infallible Word of God. And this is extremely significant because if the Bible is anything less, then the Christian's faith is significantly weakened. Remember, faith, as we have already suggested, is only as good as the object upon which it is based. If there is compelling evidence that the Bible is God's unique and infallible Word, and that it has been reliably preserved down through the ages, who would not want to know about this evidence? It would mean that we have, in the Bible, a source of truth that traces back all the way to Jesus Himself. It would also mean that in the Bible we have a "spiritual yardstick" with which to measure all other religious truth claims. It will be the purpose of this course to provide a concise survey of the evidence that for 2000 years has led Christians to the conviction that the Bible is indeed God's final revelation. It is offered in the hope that it will provide a meaningful first step to anyone who wishes to investigate Biblical Christianity and its teachings about one's relationship with God.
