“Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;” - 1 Pet 4:1 (KJV)
When we think of how “Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh,” we tend to think of his crucifixion. However, there was much more that he suffered which I believe helps us to better understand the meaning of this verse. Consider that Jesus for 33 & ½ years was on this earth enduring rejection almost everywhere he turned. He was “sinless” in a world of “sinners.” I don’t think we can appreciate what he endured for us. Every day he walked on the earth, he was a living example of Holy perfection in contrast to a world lost in sin and depravity. We cannot imagine his forbearance, patience, and love for us. Being the exact opposite of a self-willed man, he became the target of every religious leader.
We who have received Christ are to “arm yourselves likewise with the same mind,” i.e. because we have God’s Spirit in us, we must expect the same treatment as Jesus received.
“Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.” - Matt 5:10-12 (KJV)
If you are suffering for “righteousness sake” it is evidence that you have “armed yourself with the same mind” This is the suffering referred to in this verse. Jesus suffered all this and more “for us.” Because we have the Holy Spirit, like Jesus, we don’t fit into the mold of this world and we suffer for it.
“Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.” - 2 Tim 3:12 (KJV)
May God help us all to “arm” (ourselves) i.e. prepare our minds to endure suffering by his grace.
God bless, Orval
