“Heirs of Salvation”

“But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool? Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?” - Heb 1:13-2:2 (KJV)

“Heirs of salvation” seems to imply that you can inherit eternal life which has lead many Christians on a works for eternal life treadmill. However when compared to Ephesians 2:8-9 (“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” KJV) it is clear that eternal life is a gift.

When you consider the “heirs of salvation” in context, it is speaking to those who are already saved and have the opportunity to “inherit” something yet future as implied in the following three verses.

“Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;” - Heb 2:1-3 (KJV)

Notice that the “inheritance” is the subject of “the things which we have heard” and also the subject of “recompense of reward” which is forfeited through disobedience. In verse 3, the word “neglect” relates to something one has in possession i.e. the Holy Spirit and “ministering angels” if we don’t “neglect” to fix our eyes on Jesus and receive grace to obey for every challenge we face.

The challenge presented here is for the believer to not “neglect” the only means of grace to obey God and receive an “inheritance” or “reward” i.e. to be an “heir of salvation”.

“For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;” - Heb 3:14 (KJV)

This is in reference to the “reward” not the “gift”

“According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:” - 2 Pet 1:3 (KJV)

May God help us all to press on and be “heirs of salvation”

God bless, Orval
